Growing up in Fairfield Court, a public housing unit in Richmond's East End, by age 16, Monte Cosby had lost his father, uncle, and countless friends and neighbors to drug overdoses and gun violence. He struggled in the overburdened and underfunded public school system. By the time he found his way to the Legacy Academy, a small private high school serving struggling youth in the East End, Monte's GPA was below 1.0. Legacy offers one sport: cycling and students are required to participate on its team, the Richmond Cycling Corps. Initially, Monte hated riding bikes, and mountain biking were particularly challenging, both physically and mentally. Still grieving the loss of his friends and family, Monte resisted structured practices, protested during training rides, and skipped classes. He was kicked off the team numerous times. But eventually, his bike became a source of solace and motivation for Monte, so much so that in 2018, Warren Wilson College offered him a full-ride scholarship to compete on its cycling team in western North Carolina. Four years later, Monte is a junior in the liberal art school's outdoor leadership program and the first in his family to attend college.
Â
This story will trace Monte's two-wheeled trajectory from inner-city Richmond to rural North Carolina, one that has opened his eyes to the power of bikes and the transformative experiences gained from spending time in nature. We'll visit Monte on campus as he wraps up his spring semester and embarks on his first outdoor leadership job: leading mountain bike trips at Falling Creek Camp in western North Carolina. Finally, we'll join him as he leads a group of Legacy/RCC students on an overnight mountain bike trip in Virginia's George Washington National Forest.

Like many across the United States today, Demonte Cosby’s life growing up in the inner city of Richmond, Virginia, could be described with phrases such as gun violence. Single-parent home. Poverty. Drugs. Sirens. Trauma. Â
But one day, someone got Monte on a bike. He learned how to navigate obstacles. How to start well and finish sprinting. How to pass on a narrow trail, and when to let others pass. Biking became more than two wheels, and one mantra a way of life: Can’t stop. Won’t stop.  Â
He’s excited to tell you a part of his story, one that also includes phrases like college senior. Mentor. Older brother and role model. Proud son. Â
